Pick your true colour...can there also be two?

23 December 2018 by Nicole Loeffen

It sounds so logical and is often not as simple as it seems to bring into practice.
Think about something small in a specific moment like speaking out loud that you think different than the other(s). Or a huge decision that opens and also closes doors, with a big impact on your life. Recognizable? I like to share my process to inspire you.

Letting go to get both hands free
I did this 6 years ago when I left the "golden cage" of my employer to work entirely independent. I had a focus and a website already. I knew a lot of people and I had a lot of capabilities. I was easily enthusiastic and saw opportunities with my "yellow" energy. The result was a successful business, many different assignments and a website so full of information that I was getting lost in it myself. Terrific first years ... and yet I realized that I wanted to go back to my focus, but how?

Every disadvantage has advantage as well
This question kept my mind busy and I was to busy to take action. Until I fell off my horse on January 28, 2016 and broke my back. For a moment my life literally stood still.  More about this experience in my previous blog called "Resilience". I spend many horizontal recovery hours thinking about "How to pick my true colour?”.  My first important decision was not to take on ad interim jobs anymore and to focus entirely on facilitating and coaching.

Thinking in possibilities
My profession is important to me, so I started as quickly as possible with some adapted work. Let me give you an example. A good customer phoned me and said "You are the only right person to help me out facilitating a group for one day”. I answered "I am not able to help you out a whole day on short notice, but I can do twice half a day ... and I think this is better for your question as well."  I arranged my father as a taxi and I guided the group twice half a day still in my corset. And before I knew it, many knew how to find me with interesting assignments.

Dare to choose with energy as a measure instrument
'I only do things that return more energy to me than they cost me' was an important next step for me. Pretty exciting as an independent entrepreneur to "keep your hands free" by saying no to assignments while the agenda is empty. By doing this I experienced that sometimes the fitting assignments came later.  And the "empty agenda time" was and is an opportunity to put energy on things that give a lot of energy to let them grow.

The courage to be who you are
To show my true colour by simply being "who I am" has brought me far in a literally and figuratively way.  My dream to work more internationally is now a reality. I am regularly working elsewhere in Europe. This summer I was in Canada and in March 2019 I go to South Africa. Becoming "who you really are" asks for good conversations with yourself and the courage to convert your insights into change. I myself am the living example that it works, and I see so much positive impact at others. By being "who I am" I get appreciation for what I do and the right things "automatically" come on my way.

Take others with you
"Automatically" is not always that easy. After all, it is important that others know who you are and what you bring along with you. So a logical step is a website that tells you who you are and what you do. In facts and words, and in colours and experiences. I deliberately chose two colours that tell my story. Turquoise blue for clarity ... this is the colour that always makes me happy because I immediately think of a clear sky above the sea on a sunny spot. And warm orange-red ... the colour of warmth, humanity and a rising sun. These colours are what I stand for ... clarity and warmth ... yes that can indeed go together. This combination makes "who I am" and what I always bring with me ... in my contact with you as well.
Curious? I am always in a cup of coffee and a good conversation.
